associate provost for academic affairs
“and gladly would he learn, and gladly teach.”
- from geoffrey chaucer’s “the canterbury tales”
what drew you to the higher education world?
my father and mother instilled the value of education in me and my brother at a young age. it was always my father’s aspiration to get a doctoral degree, but he ended up having to work and never had the chance. in a certain sense, i fulfilled his dream. my mom worked at loyola university in new orleans, and so i was exposed as a boy to the culture of higher education and was fascinated by it.
what do you enjoy most about your role at sfa?
working with first-generation students through the program i cofounded, generation jacks. i have seen students take great leaps intellectually, socially and emotionally through this program. i would be lost if i were not directly connected to student learning.
what do you hope students gain from sfa?
many things, but most of all, a greater sense of citizenship — of civic duty, of the common good, of their role in both their local community and the global community.
what are you passionate about outside of your role at sfa?
i love gardening and cooking, being with my family, and reading a good book.
